Lottery games are always popular, from scratch-offs where you can win a few dollars to PowerBalls and EuroMillions with huge prizes. And a lot of stores use them to get customers to buy other things. But a UK store chain has decided that the National Lottery doesn’t need to be in the family anymore.
The Wilko chain of stores in the UK changed at the end of 2022 and the start of 2023. The company decided that it doesn’t need to keep working with Camelot and the National Lottery.
It’s not clear why the company decided to make the change now. Camelot, which runs the lottery, recently said that the numbers were at an all-time high. But Wilko makes it sound like the change is about money.
A lot of the time, lottery products are a great way to get people into a store. When you buy a lottery ticket, you have to go shopping, even if you only need one or two things.
The Nottingham Post says that Wilko no longer thinks the relationship is important. The company is said to have called the decision “smart” and said that selling lottery products is no longer a “priority.” Also, if it changed its mind, it would “need a substantial investment” to keep going.
Wilko doesn’t want to sell National Lottery items because it wants to focus on its own brand. It said that it wants to improve both the way it works with its employees and the way it treats its customers.
Also, the company says that the decision won’t change how much money the Lottery gives to good causes. This is because it has its own charity work, which is said to raise up to £10,000 ($12,046) a week for good causes.
Wilko says that through its program, it has given away more than £2 million (US$2.4 million) over the past four years. Charities like Save the Children, the Alzheimer’s Society, and the Teenage Cancer Trust have been given money in the past.
Wilko has 370 stores in England and Wales at the moment, according to the company’s website. They sell things for the home and garden, tools for DIY projects, and more.
The National Lottery keeps getting better and better. Camelot is still in charge of the lottery until Allwyn takes over in 2024. It recently released the numbers for the first half of its current financial year, which showed that sales hit a new high.
During the first six months of the time period, Camelot set a sales record. It will be one of the best things about the company as it starts to wind down before Allwyn takes over.
During the first half of the new fiscal year, which just ended, Camelot made more than £4 billion ($4.82 billion) in sales. A company statement says that this is the first time it has reached this level since the company began running the National Lottery.
That has been shown to help good causes as well. Camelot said that it had given £956.5 million ($1.15 billion) in donations during the period, which was the most it had ever given in the first half of a fiscal year. It made more than £1.9 billion ($2.28 billion) for all of 2022.
