New York Jets will finish the season by trying to ruin Miami Dolphins’ chances of making the playoffs.
The New York Jets can only do harm. They end a good season on Sunday in Miami against the Dolphins, who are fighting to make the playoffs and may use a journeyman quarterback they signed on Wednesday.
This is why the line for this week has changed from Jets +1 to Jets -1 or -1 1/2. You think it matters that Gang Green fans don’t like Zach Wilson? Bettors and major bookmakers don’t like the team that plays behind Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater.
If luck had been on their side, Zach Wilson and Tagovailoa would have played in a game to decide where they would play in the playoffs. Wilson has been taken off the field, and Tagovailoa has not practiced this week because he is back in the concussion protocol.
If the Dolphins win and the Patriots lose at Buffalo, Miami would move on to the wild card round. The AFC seeding won’t be decided until the NFL decides if and when the Bills-Bengals game will continue.
Mike White is the Jets’ starter at quarterback. Even though coach Robert Saleh gave Wilson, a 23-year-old quarterback, a strong recommendation on Wednesday, Wilson has been playing on the practice squad, which usually means he is on the bench.
A playoff-bound home team will likely prevail against a season-ending opponent. Dolphins quarterback’s hell. The starters practice with Skylar Thompson. Tagovailoa is in the concussion protocol, and Teddy Bridgewater can’t throw because his pinkie finger dislocated on Sunday.
If Bridgewater’s condition worsens, Mike Glennon or Thompson might start. After Bridgewater’s injury against the Patriots, Kansas State’s freshman quarterback Thompson went 12 for 24 for 104 yards, one score, and one interception. His sixth game of the season and third with significant minutes.
New England intercepted five Thompson passes. He completed a 4-yard touchdown throw to Mike Gesicki with 1:04 left, but an onside kick cost the Dolphins their sixth straight game.
Jets lost five straight. Minnesota beat them 5–0 on December 4. This started a losing streak against the Bills, Lions, Jaguars, and Seahawks. The second-lowest weekend over/under is 38 1/2 since New York scored 3 points against Jacksonville and 6 points against Seattle.
New York’s last four and nine of 11 games have gone under, while Miami’s last seven have gone over and under. Dolphins games feature 38 1/2 lines this season.
Resorts World has Jets—1/2. Jets 7-1.
Mike White will start against Miami in the last game of the season, and Joe Flacco will be the back-up. Wednesday, coach Robert Saleh said that Wilson still has a place on the team.
Saleh said, “Zach has all the talent in the world, and we all believe in him.” I’ve said that we’ll grind with him from this “reset.” “Come hell or high water, we’ll get him where we know he can be.”
The media and fans are right when they say that the No. 2 pick in the 2021 draft was a bust. Wilson has made 22 starts and has thrown for 15 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. He has a 55.2 percent completion rate and a 72.8 quarterback rating.
The off-season will tell us if Saleh talked up Wilson to make him more valuable for trade. Saleh believes in his Jets on Sunday.
“When those players put on their helmets, they’re pros—they get it,” said Robert Saleh, the coach of the New York Jets. “I don’t think players tank, don’t show up, or don’t play hard because these guys are putting footage out there for 31 other teams, fans, and everyone to watch. No matter what their record is, players and coaches take pride in doing their best. So I’m not worried that our guys will show up to this game and try to mess it up.”
Saleh and Mike McDaniel were friends when they lived in Houston and San Francisco. Saleh joked that he wanted to keep McDaniel from making the playoffs.
“Wouldn’t it be great to have McDaniel join me by the pool in a few weeks? Saleh agreed. “But really, it’s more about us, making sure we’re focused on having a great season finale and doing our best, and whatever happens, happens.”
