Finding the Lottery Ticket Winner Who Left Winnings in Shopping Cart
People in Cambridgeshire, UK, are searching for Barry, a lottery winner who left a “large” check in a grocery store shopping cart.
Good Richard Haslop found the check at his local Tesco. Richard is now using social media to find “Barry” and pay him.
Haslop told ITV News Anglia that the cart had a Barry Levett check and six UK National and EuroMillions lottery tickets. He said the check is valuable.
It’s unclear if the check was a huge novelty check meant to promote lotteries or a regular size.
“Know anyone named Barry Levett? My wife found some lottery tickets in a Tesco’s cart, and we’d like to give them back to the owner,” Haslop wrote on Facebook.
People on social media are very interested in the campaign, but Levett hasn’t shown himself yet.
My wife’s name is also Barry Levett!” said one Facebook user who was obviously not joking.
Hislop says he will ask people to “describe what the tickets are kept in” so he can figure out who the real Barry Levett is and who might be pretending to be him.
Lottery winners often spend their winnings too quickly, but leaving them in a grocery cart seems to be a first.
People lose their winning tickets more often, forfeiting their large payouts. Last year, British couple Martyn and Kay Tott broke up due to stress after losing a £3 million jackpot, according to the Daily Mirror. After five years in court, the Totts failed to win the jackpot.
Moreover, British lottery players should be more cautious. One Sceptered Isle resident holds the world record for the largest unclaimed lottery jackpot.
An unclaimed £63.8 million ticket sold in Hertfordshire, north of London, expired in June 2012. Despite a national marketing campaign, no one stepped forward within 180 days, therefore the money went to good causes.
