The injured people were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. From what was said at first, their injuries did not seem to be life-threatening.
Near Fremont and Fourth streets, near the Fremont Street Experience, is where the shootings happened. It is a popular place for people to walk, and there are many casinos, restaurants, bars, and stages for live music nearby. KLAS, a local TV station, said it looks like the shooting at 10:15 pm was caused by a fight between the shooter and more than one person.
Officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) looked for witnesses and proof in the area. They most likely also looked at footage from security cameras.
As of Thursday night, the police still hadn’t caught anyone in this case.
Earlier this year, there were serious shootings and other acts of violence at or near the Fremont Street Experience.
Most notably, Raymond Renova, who was 23 years old, was shot and killed there on June 19. He lived in Las Vegas and worked as a tattoo artist. A second person was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. He was said to be a “helpless bystander.”
At first, it looked like there was a fight between a few people. When things got worse, one of the people pulled out a gun. Local TV station KTNV said that both Renova and the second victim were hit by bullets.
Ruben Robles, who was 16 at the time, was later arrested by LVMPD officers for the shooting. He was charged with killing someone, trying to kill someone, and hiding a gun. The trial for his case is set for April of next year.
In July, Fabian Carmona, who is 22 years old, was also arrested in connection with the shootings in June. The Las Vegas Review-Journal said that he is being charged with murder with a deadly weapon, attempted murder with a deadly weapon, and planning to kill someone.
He is said to have taken part in the fight that led to the death and attack. KLAS said that Carmona was the one who “threw the first punch” and stepped on one of the victims. In the fight, he was also stabbed, the report said.
The court case against him is still going on. Carmona is still in the Clark County Detention Center.
Because of the fatal shooting and other acts of violence in downtown Las Vegas, the police started enforcing stricter search rules and other safety measures in the area this summer. The permission for the new rules was good until the end of last month.
People who wanted to go to the Fremont Street Experience had to go through metal detectors and be searched for security. Guards looked through the bags and IDs of people walking by. One of the extra safety measures was a curfew on weekends for people under 21.
Under the new rules, no one under the age of 21 could enter the pedestrian mall without a parent or guardian after 8 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. During those times, street performers were also not allowed.
The rules led the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada to file a lawsuit (ACLU). The suit says that a street performer and two 18-year-olds were unfairly picked on. The lawsuit said that it goes against the First Amendment.
Also, since the summer, the LVMPD has been more visible on and around downtown Fremont Street on weekends.
