The NSW government will change how casinos pay taxes.
To fund essential state services, New South Wales will modify casino taxation.
The government intends to tax casino poker machines and gaming tables. On July 1, 2023, the increased rates should bring $364 million in taxes to the state over three years.
The new tax arrangements will benefit the State’s budget strategy and recovery from COVID-19, floods, and bushfires, according to Treasury’s Matt Kean.
Casinos must pay taxes. In fact, Kean said that these new tax rates for poker machines will replace the current system, which taxes hotels and clubs more than casinos. With these changes, casinos will continue to help the community and help the government provide important services.
Moreover, the official also emphasized that thousands of people work and play in NSW casinos, showing the industry’s continued economic benefit. Kean claimed the tax hike will pay such a donation. NSW taxes will match Victoria’s. Officials say the 2022-23 Victorian Budget would alter casino taxation.
The government is fixing the gaming business by changing taxes. The policy will impact Star Entertainment Group, whose Sydney operations contributed half of the company’s revenue in fiscal year 2022. Additionally, the corporation is being sued for failing to prevent money laundering in federal court.
Star Entertainment is “urgently talking to the NSW government about how the planned tax changes will effect The Star’s operations and if they can function.”
New South Wales is spending $33 million from the Responsible Gaming Fund this year to aid problem gamblers, warn the public, and investigate gaming behavior. To show it cares about NSW residents’ well-being, the Government allocated $5 million to the Responsible Gambling Fund this year.
The latest idea would provide the State $364 million in tax money for this.
