Since China lifted its COVID-19 protocols, there have been a lot of new infections on the mainland and in Macau and Hong Kong, which are Special Administrative Regions of the People’s Republic.

Macau casinos have been eagerly waiting for China to ease its pandemic response measures for almost three years, especially the lifting of Beijing’s “zero-COVID” policy. Now that Macau’s borders are as open as they’ve been since the coronavirus started spreading in China in December 2019, casinos in the area are hopeful that business will pick up.

But because China’s herd immunity isn’t as strong as it should be, the virus is said to be spreading quickly across mainland China and its regions and territories.

Inside Asian Gaming said yesterday that COVID-19 has infected about half of the people who work in casinos in Macau. Since the beginning of this month, China has been easing “zero-COVID.” Beijing lifted “zero-COVID” after a lot of people complained that the country was trying too hard to get rid of the virus completely.

Holidays Ho-Hum

Even though Christmas isn’t a traditional holiday in China, the mainland has become more open to it in recent years. Many Chinese people celebrate Christmas these days, but not as a religious or holy day, but as a commercial holiday.

In the years before the pandemic, Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year’s were busy times for casinos in Macau. But Inside Asian Gaming says that COVID-19’s spread over the weekend made the casino resorts pretty much dead.

Local estimates say that about half of the people in Macau are spread out. The coronavirus is thought to be present or recently present in about half of the people who work in casinos.

Because of this, the casinos in Macau were not busy over Christmas.

IAG went to the Cotai Strip on Saturday and saw that there were not many people there. The famous Venetian shopping mall wasn’t very busy, and some restaurants had to close because their staff got sick, a news source said.

“The same was true for businesses on the Macau peninsula. For example, some shops in the One Central mall next to MGM Macau had to close because their employees were sick,” said IAG journalist Pierce Chan.

January bounce back?

Local officials believe that life will return to normal after a COVID-19 outbreak. Then more people feel safe coming out. Preventing deaths is the current priority.

It won’t be simple if the infection spreads. Radio Free Asia reported over the weekend that around 250 million Chinese may have COVID-19. Based on a government leak.

The leaked document from China’s National Health Commission reported 248 million viral cases. Health professionals worldwide estimate 5,000 deaths every day if those estimates are right.

The National Health Commission stated data is “difficult to track” after China eliminated required mass testing rounds in response to emerging diseases.

COVID-19’s rapid proliferation worries people. About 20% of mainland Chinese have the virus.

“There’s a major epidemic that’s growing so fast that people are terrified, which no one imagined. A local casino industry representative told IAG that we can only hope for a true rebound in the second half of January, once Macau residents have gotten acclimated to the virus.
